MAT107 Online : Course Information & Permission Request

Note: You may find it useful to print this page so you can follow the directions carefully.

Facts About the Course

  1. The course theme is History of Mathematics, but it is still a math course and you will do a good amount of math in the course.

  2. You really DO need to have prerequisites satisfied for the course when the course begins. If you don't have a 2.0 in MAT098 or a Math Placement Test score allowing you in, I need to give preference to students who do,and this course always fills. If you are taking MAT098 right now and end up not earning a 2.0, you may be allowed to register for the course, but once the quarter begins, you will probably be dropped when prerequisites are checked by the registration system in the first week of classes.

  3. The course involves a LOT of reading and writing (essays, online posts of opinions, projects, etc). Therefore, prior completion of English 101 is highly recommended to help you succeed. You will need to read all the material on your own. Please keep this in mind as you consider whether or not this course is a good fit for you.

  4. The course is highly structured with strict deadlines throughout the quarter. Late material and work is generally not accepted. So, it's important that you stay on track, be disciplined, and be motivated if you want to succeed in this course.

  5. There are no in-person meetings in this course...it is conducted entirely online. However, the course expects that you will log into the course web site at least 4 to 5 days a week. Therefore, you must have regular access to a computer connected to the Internet.

  6. You need to log in to the course website within the first three days of the quarter and complete the introductory assignment. If you do not to do this, the college policy stated that you can BE DROPPED FROM THE COURSE FOR NON-ATTENDANCE.

  7. If you are looking for an "easy" math course, an online math course is not the way to go. The class is doable but it requires a good of work, time, effort, and discipline. You also have to plan well, especially to avoid running into last-minute technology problems. Students in the past have reported spending an average of 12 to 14 hours PER WEEK on this course. However, pass rates in the past have been solid (more than 90%). So, take all of this into account as you decide if an online math course is a good match for you.

  8. If you have high math anxiety or other issues that would make this course overly difficult, this course may not be a good match for you.

  9. If you are unfamiliar with the internet or computers, please don't take this course. Take a basic computer course first. In this course, you will need to be able to do the following:
    1. Access the interenet regularly.
    2. Send and receive emails regularly.
    3. Use a digital camera or phone to take pictures of your math work, send those pictures to your computer, and follow directions to upload those pictures to the WAMAP site so the instructor can grade them
    4. Follow directions closely on a computer screen.

  10. Only the instructor for the course can grant permission for this course. If you enroll without permission from the instructor, you will be dropped from the course to make room for those who went through the established permission process (this page and this form). This is necessary to make sure students know what the course is about and to create a fair, uniform process that all students go through to enroll in the course.

  11. I do not add students to the course once the quarter officially begins so that all students are on board at the start of the course and don't have to catch up because the "show up" late. (Very rare exceptions may apply such as students in the military who make prior arrangements with me.)

  12. You should read a copy of a recent syllabus before you enroll. Click here to see one.

  9. There are TWO online assessments you should finish before the quarter starts.
    • The WAMAP Tutorial will give you some information on how to answer different questions online.
    • The Preliminary Mathematics Inventory will test you on whether or not you have the algebra and arithmetic skills needed for this course. THIS WILL COUNT AS PART OF YOUR COURSE GRADE AND IS DUE BY THE SECOND DAY OF THE QUARTER.
